Outdoor area lighting should be selected around site geometry, pole layout, distribution, and required illuminance rather than fixture wattage alone.
STARLAKE LED area lights combine configurable output, Type II–V optics, flexible mounting, voltage options, and lighting controls for parking lots, roadways, auto dealerships, campuses, walkways, building perimeters, and other commercial outdoor sites.
For lighting brands, distributors, contractors, importers, and project suppliers, STARLAKE also provides OEM/ODM engineering, manufacturing, quality control, and North American warehouse support.
How to Choose the Right LED Area Light
Total lumens describe available light, while spatial distribution determines where that light reaches the site. Fixtures with similar lumen output can therefore produce different illuminance and uniformity.
A practical selection process should consider five factors.
1. Site Geometry
Define the application and dimensions. Narrow roadways, open parking areas, perimeter positions, and pedestrian routes require different patterns of light.
2. Pole Height and Spacing
Mounting height and pole spacing affect output requirements, distribution, coverage, and uniformity. Higher wattage cannot compensate for unsuitable pole geometry or optics.
3. Illuminance and Distribution
Establish the required light level on the target surface, then select a distribution that directs available light toward that area.
4. Electrical, Mounting, and Controls
Confirm supply voltage, mounting interface, CCT, dimming, photocell, and sensor requirements before specifying the final configuration.
5. Photometric Verification
For project lighting, use fixture-specific photometric data with the actual site layout to evaluate coverage and expected light levels.
This sequence reduces the risk of overlighting, dark zones, wasted energy, and incompatible configurations.
Type II, III, IV or V: Match the Distribution to the Site
Secondary optics redistribute LED output into patterns suited to different site geometries.
STARLAKE area light configurations support Type II, Type III, Type IV, and Type V distributions.
| Distribution | Lighting Characteristic | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| Type II | Lateral distribution for relatively narrow, elongated areas | Roadways, drive lanes, narrow circulation areas |
| Type III | Forward asymmetric distribution with useful lateral coverage | Parking areas, drive areas, general site lighting |
| Type IV | Primarily forward distribution with limited backlight | Perimeter poles, property boundaries, edge-mounted applications |
| Type V | More symmetrical distribution around the mounting position | Open parking areas, central pole positions, general area lighting |
There is no universal distribution for every site. A perimeter pole may require forward coverage with controlled backlight, while an interior pole in an open area may require illumination in several directions.
The objective is to match the photometric pattern to the area the pole actually serves.
Uniformity Matters as Much as Lumen Output
High total output or center intensity does not guarantee effective area illumination.
Poor distribution can produce bright zones near poles, dark areas between fixtures, excessive spill light, or inefficient spacing.
Installed performance depends on the interaction of:
Lumen Output + Optical Distribution + Mounting Height + Pole Spacing + Illuminance + Uniformity
Glare should also be evaluated because compact LED sources can produce high luminance within common viewing directions.
Fixture positioning and suitable optics should therefore be evaluated together rather than using lumen output as the primary performance measure.
Built for Project Flexibility
Outdoor projects differ in pole layouts, electrical systems, mounting conditions, and operating strategies.
| Configuration | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Selectable Wattage | Allows output to be adjusted for different site conditions |
| Type II–V Optics | Adapts distribution to roadway, perimeter, and open-area layouts |
| Multiple Voltage Options | Supports different commercial and industrial electrical systems |
| Flexible Mounting | Accommodates different poles, arms, tenons, and structural conditions |
| Dimming & Sensor Options | Supports operating schedules and energy-management strategies |
Available configurations vary by model. Final selection should follow the project’s optical, electrical, mechanical, and control requirements.
LED Area Lighting by Application
Different outdoor environments place different demands on distribution, pole position, and controls.
| Application | Key Selection Considerations |
|---|---|
| Parking Lots | Uniformity, pole spacing, pedestrian and vehicle visibility, Type III/V distribution |
| Roadways & Drive Areas | Directional coverage, roadway width, pole spacing, controlled forward throw |
| Auto Dealerships | Lot visibility, display-area coverage, perimeter conditions, nighttime operation |
| Campuses & Walkways | Pedestrian visibility, circulation routes, mounting height, controls |
| Building Perimeters | Forward distribution, boundary conditions, backlight and spill-light control |
These are starting directions rather than fixed optical specifications. Actual pole position, site geometry, mounting height, and target illuminance should determine the final distribution.
Smarter Outdoor Lighting With Controls
Depending on model and configuration, STARLAKE area lights support 0–10V dimming, photocell, and motion or occupancy sensing options.
Photocell → Automatic dusk-to-dawn operation
Motion / Occupancy Sensor → Reduced output during low-activity periods
0–10V Dimming → Integration with compatible dimming and control strategies
Controls reduce unnecessary full-output operating hours while allowing the required illumination to be restored when the site is in use.
Mounting Options for New Projects and Retrofits
Depending on product configuration, STARLAKE supports slip-fitters, square or round pole mounts, arm-mounted configurations, trunnions, and yokes.
Slip-fitters provide aiming flexibility, while direct pole or arm mounting supports defined pole layouts. Trunnions and yokes can serve alternative structural conditions or applications requiring additional adjustment.
For existing poles, confirm tenon or pole dimensions, mounting orientation, fixture position, and supply voltage before ordering.
Pole photographs and dimensions can also help identify mounting compatibility before installation.
Designed for Long-Term Outdoor Operation
Current STARLAKE area light designs use die-cast aluminum housings with UV-resistant powder-coated finishes and are specified for IP65 wet-location applications, with a published operating range of -40°F to 113°F (-40°C to 45°C).
Thermal performance depends on transferring heat from the LED assembly through the luminaire structure into the surrounding environment.
A simplified path is:
LED junction → PCB or MCPCB → thermal interface → die-cast aluminum structure → surrounding air
STARLAKE’s current area light specifications state LED junction temperature below 85°C under stated design conditions.
Environmental suitability should still be evaluated with sealing, corrosion exposure, ambient temperature, electrical conditions, and installation method rather than IP rating or thermal data alone.
Replacing HID Area Lights With LED
Metal halide and high-pressure sodium fixtures remain common retrofit targets in outdoor lighting.
LED conversion can reduce connected load, provide instant operation, support controls, and offer more flexible photometric distributions. Replacement selection, however, should follow required site performance rather than fixed wattage equivalence.
Evaluate:
Existing fixture and system wattage
Pole height and spacing
Site geometry
Required illuminance and uniformity
Existing and proposed distribution
Supply voltage
Mounting interface
Controls
The replacement should provide the required maintained illumination and distribution across the actual site rather than simply substitute a lower-wattage fixture.
OEM & ODM LED Area Light Solutions
STARLAKE supports lighting brands, distributors, importers, wholesalers, contractors, and project suppliers requiring standard or customized area-lighting programs.
OEM and ODM capabilities can include optics, wattage and electrical configurations, drivers, sensors, housing and finish requirements, private labeling, packaging, and project-specific development.
Different changes have different engineering consequences.
| Customization | Possible Project Impact |
|---|---|
| Optical Distribution | Photometric evaluation or validation |
| Driver / Voltage | Electrical compatibility and testing |
| Sensors & Controls | Control compatibility and functional testing |
| Housing / Structure | Mechanical, tooling, or thermal evaluation |
| Branding / Packaging | MOQ, packaging development, and lead time |
| Major Electrical Changes | Possible certification review or additional testing |
STARLAKE’s 50+ engineers and 100+ technical patents support optical, thermal, electrical, structural, and manufacturability considerations during development.
Because customization can affect tooling, certification, MOQ, testing, cost, and lead time, these requirements should be defined early.
LED Area Light Manufacturing & Quality Control
Founded in 2010, STARLAKE operates approximately 280,000 sq.ft of production facilities with 400+ employees, with manufacturing operations in Asia and warehouse support in Ohio and California.
STARLAKE has 30+ QC professionals supporting production quality. Bulk orders undergo an 8-hour aging test before shipment, while new products undergo 30 days of continuous high-temperature testing during product validation.
These procedures help identify early electrical, component, thermal, and assembly issues. Aging and validation testing should not be interpreted as a direct simulation or guarantee of full service life.
The manufacturing structure supports individual projects as well as recurring commercial, distributor, and private-label area-lighting programs.
