STARLAKE provides LED post top lights for parks, pathways, plazas, campuses, municipal areas, commercial landscapes, retail developments, corporate parks, and other pedestrian-oriented outdoor spaces.
Unlike purely functional area lighting, a post top luminaire must solve two problems at the same time: deliver useful illumination from a pole-mounted position and integrate visually with the surrounding architecture and landscape.
For lighting brands, distributors, contractors, municipalities, and project buyers, STARLAKE offers modern, traditional lantern, and decorative acorn-style post top platforms, together with OEM/ODM engineering, controlled manufacturing, quality assurance, and North American warehousing support.
How to Choose the Right LED Post Top Light
Post top light selection should begin with the site rather than fixture wattage or appearance alone.
A pathway, plaza, park, campus, municipal streetscape, and commercial landscape may require different coverage, mounting conditions, visual character, and nighttime lighting performance.
A practical selection process is:
Site Function → Pole & Target Area → Distribution → Ground Performance → Visual Comfort → Fixture Style → Final Configuration
First determine where useful light is required and the planned or existing pole conditions. Then evaluate how the fixture distributes light across the target area before selecting output, appearance, CCT, controls, and other project-specific requirements.
This distinction matters because total lumen output does not by itself describe the lighting result on the ground.
For post top lighting, useful distribution matters more than lumens alone.
Pole Height, Distribution & Ground Performance
Post top luminaires operate from an elevated mounting position, so their practical performance depends on the relationship between the pole, fixture photometry, target area, and fixture spacing.
A useful design relationship is:
Pole Height → Light Distribution → Ground Coverage → Illuminance → Uniformity
Lighting engineering references emphasize that total luminous flux does not describe where light actually reaches. Spatial light distribution is often more important when evaluating practical illumination.
This distinction can be understood through two measurements:
Lumens describe the total light emitted by the luminaire.
Illuminance describes how much light reaches a surface.
For a post top project, ground illuminance is particularly important because pedestrians experience the light reaching pathways, plazas, entrances, and surrounding surfaces—not simply the lumen value listed on a specification sheet.
Uniformity matters as well. A layout with isolated bright areas followed by substantially darker zones can produce a very different nighttime environment from one that distributes useful illumination more consistently across the intended route or activity area.
The overall relationship becomes:
Fixture Output + Distribution + Pole Height + Spacing → Ground Illuminance & Uniformity
This is why two fixtures with similar lumen output can produce different site-lighting results.
There is also no universal spacing distance for LED post top lights. A narrow pedestrian pathway and a broad plaza may use the same general luminaire category but require different pole heights, distributions, outputs, and spacing.
For commercial, campus, municipal, and public-space projects, fixture-specific photometric data should therefore be evaluated against the actual site plan rather than relying on a fixed wattage, lumen, or feet-between-poles rule.
Manage Glare, Spill Light & Uplight
Post top fixtures are often installed close to pedestrian activity, making source visibility and optical control important considerations.
Lighting references note that concentrated light can contribute to glare and nonuniform illumination, while exterior lighting should direct useful light toward the intended area.
For project evaluation, consider:
- Direct Source Visibility — how prominent is the bright source from normal pedestrian viewing positions?
- Spill Light — does light extend unnecessarily beyond the intended pathway, plaza, or landscape zone?
- Uplight — how much output is directed above the useful target area?
These characteristics depend on fixture-specific optics, photometric distribution, pole height, orientation, spacing, and installation conditions.
Where a project has specific cutoff, uplight, or nighttime-environment requirements, performance should be verified using the relevant fixture photometry and project criteria.
Match Post Top Style to the Architectural Context
Post top lighting is both an illumination system and a visible streetscape element.
Unlike many industrial luminaires selected primarily around functional performance, post top fixtures remain visually prominent during both daytime and nighttime conditions. Their form, proportion, housing, lens, pole relationship, and finish can therefore influence the character of the surrounding environment.
Lighting references recognize that pole-mounted streetscape fixtures range from ornate traditional forms to contemporary designs and are often selected to coordinate with surrounding architecture.
STARLAKE’s current post top range supports different visual directions:
| Design Direction | Typical Project Fit |
|---|---|
| Modern / Contemporary | Commercial developments, campuses, contemporary public spaces |
| Traditional Lantern | Parks, plazas, pedestrian districts, traditional architecture |
| Acorn / Decorative | Municipal streetscapes, historic-style districts, parks, civic landscapes |
Style should not be evaluated independently from lighting performance.
Architectural Context + Required Lighting Performance → Appropriate Post Top Platform
This allows the luminaire to contribute to the identity of the site while still performing its functional lighting role.
Choosing CCT for Post Top Lighting
STARLAKE’s current post top platforms include selectable 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K configurations, depending on the specific model.
| CCT | General Visual Character |
|---|---|
| 3000K | Warmer nighttime appearance |
| 4000K | Neutral visual character |
| 5000K | Cooler, crisper appearance |
There is no universal best CCT for every post top project. Selection should coordinate with the site’s architecture, landscape character, surrounding lighting, visual requirements, and project specifications.
Where multiple outdoor fixture types are used within one site, coordinated CCT can also help maintain a consistent nighttime appearance.
Controls for Outdoor Operating Schedules
Post top lighting often operates for long nighttime periods, but not every site requires the same output throughout all operating hours.
STARLAKE’s current PT01, PT02, and PT03 platforms support 0–10V dimming, while additional control-related options are available on selected configurations.
Controls can help align lighting operation with site schedules and activity levels rather than treating every hour as an identical full-output requirement.
Dimming, sensor, auxiliary power, and other control capabilities should be confirmed for the specific product configuration.
Outdoor Exposure & Pole Compatibility
Post top luminaires operate continuously in exterior environments, so selection must account for both environmental exposure and installation conditions.
Moisture, dust, UV exposure, temperature variation, and other site conditions can influence enclosure, material, electrical, and installation requirements.
Current STARLAKE PT01, PT02, and PT03 specifications identify these platforms as suitable for wet-location applications.
Pole compatibility is particularly important in retrofit and replacement projects. Existing pole dimensions, mounting interfaces, electrical supply, structural condition, and installation access should be verified before fixture selection.
A useful project check is:
Site Environment → Fixture Requirements → Pole Interface → Installation Method
For coastal, corrosive, extreme-temperature, or otherwise demanding environments, project-specific conditions should be identified before confirming the luminaire configuration.
Replacing HID & Legacy Post Top Fixtures
LED post top lights are frequently used to modernize outdoor systems that previously relied on HID or other legacy light sources.
However, retrofit selection should not be based on:
Existing HID Wattage = New LED Wattage
LED and legacy luminaires can differ in optical efficiency, spatial distribution, controls, and how much emitted light reaches the intended area. Lighting references also emphasize the importance of spatial light distribution when evaluating useful illumination.
A better retrofit process is:
Existing Pole & Fixture → Mounting Conditions → Existing Distribution → Required Ground Performance → LED Photometry → New Configuration
Useful project inputs include:
- Existing fixture and lamp type
- Pole height and spacing
- Pole-top / mounting interface
- Input voltage
- Existing controls
- Required lighting performance
Depending on the new luminaire’s photometry, the appropriate LED solution may not require a direct one-for-one wattage match.
Replace the required lighting performance—not simply the old wattage.
Where Are LED Post Top Lights Used?
LED post top lighting is commonly used where outdoor illumination must support pedestrian activity while remaining visually integrated with the surrounding site.
| Application | Main Project Considerations |
|---|---|
| Parks & Gardens | Pedestrian visibility, landscape character, CCT, fixture style |
| Walkways & Pathways | Pole spacing, distribution, uniformity, visual comfort |
| Plazas & Public Spaces | Coverage, pedestrian activity, architectural coordination |
| Campuses | Route continuity, fixture consistency, operating schedules |
| Municipal Streetscapes | Distribution, pole compatibility, architectural context |
| Commercial Developments | Entrances, circulation, landscape integration |
| Corporate & Retail Areas | Visual character, pedestrian zones, controls, site consistency |
Different areas within one project may require different output, distribution, pole height, or fixture style even when the same post top family is used.
For larger sites, the objective is to build a coordinated lighting system around actual circulation patterns, ground-performance requirements, and architectural context rather than selecting one configuration for every location.

What We Need to Recommend the Right LED Post Top Light
A useful recommendation starts with the site, pole, and required lighting result—not simply a requested wattage.
For project evaluation or quotation, provide as much of the following information as possible:
- Project or application type
- Site plan or lighting layout
- Target area dimensions
- Existing or planned pole height
- Pole spacing
- Pole-top / mounting dimensions
- Required illuminance or project lighting criteria
- Preferred fixture style
- Input voltage
- Preferred CCT
- Dimming or control requirements
- Environmental conditions
- Required certifications
- Housing / finish requirements
- Existing fixture information for retrofit projects
- Estimated quantity
If available, also send a site plan, pole layout, photometric requirement, architectural drawing, existing fixture specification, or installation photographs.
STARLAKE can then evaluate fixture platform, output, photometric distribution, pole compatibility, spacing, CCT, controls, and other project requirements around the actual site rather than recommending a post top light from wattage alone.
Define the target area, required ground performance, pole conditions, and architectural context before selecting the fixture.
