Why Circular Downlights Work for Commercial Interiors
A recessed downlight delivers illumination from within or close to the ceiling plane while minimizing the visual bulk of the luminaire.
This makes circular downlights suitable for finished commercial interiors requiring broad downward ambient illumination.
Installed performance depends on:
Output + Distribution + Mounting Height + Spacing + Ceiling Conditions
The fixture should therefore be selected around the room and lighting task rather than wattage or aperture size independently.
110° Wide Distribution for Broad Ambient Lighting
STARLAKE Circular Downlights use a 110° beam angle, positioning the series primarily for broad ambient illumination rather than tightly focused accent lighting.
With an appropriate layout, adjacent beams can overlap to support more continuous illumination across offices, corridors, lobbies, reception areas, and other general commercial spaces.
A useful relationship is:
110° Distribution + Ceiling Height + Fixture Spacing → Coverage & Uniformity
When Is a Narrower Beam Better?
Narrower distributions are generally more appropriate when the lighting needs to concentrate intensity on merchandise, artwork, architectural details, or another defined target.
Broad downlighting and concentrated accent lighting therefore solve different optical tasks.
Select the distribution according to the target, not the fixture shape alone.
Don’t Select a Downlight by Wattage Alone
The current STARLAKE range provides three size and output levels:
| Dimensioni | Power | Lumen Output | Efficacy | Beam Angle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4″ | 9W | 720 lm | 80 lm/W | 110° |
| 6″ | 12W | 960 lm | 80 lm/W | 110° |
| 8″ | 18W | 1,440 lm | 80 lm/W | 110° |
The 18W model produces twice the lumen output of the 9W model, but this does not establish a two-for-one fixture replacement relationship.
Fixture size, output, and quantity should be coordinated with ceiling height, spacing, room geometry, surface reflectance, and required illuminance.
The objective is to achieve the required lighting result with an appropriate layout rather than maximize watts per fixture.
Mounting Height and Spacing Determine the Final Result
The same downlight can produce different results as ceiling height and spacing change.
As the distance to the target plane increases, the beam covers a larger area while illuminance generally decreases. Increasing fixture spacing can reduce quantity but may create darker areas between adjacent luminaires.
A preliminary relationship is:
Ceiling Height + Beam Distribution + Spacing → Illuminance & Uniformity
Spacing-to-mounting-height ratios and illuminance-cone information can support preliminary planning, but they do not replace project-specific lighting calculations.
Where illuminance or uniformity criteria are defined, verify the layout with fixture-specific photometric data or IES files using the actual room geometry and target plane.
Configure Light Quality for the Space
Downlight specification also involves CCT, color rendering, and dimming.
Five Selectable Color Temperatures
STARLAKE Circular Downlights provide:
2700K / 3000K / 3500K / 4000K / 5000K
2700K and 3000K provide warmer visual conditions, while 3500K and 4000K provide more neutral appearances commonly used across professional interiors. 5000K provides a cooler visual character where required by the project.
CCT should follow the architectural and lighting intent rather than one universal recommendation.
Field selectability also creates a B2B sourcing advantage:
5CCT Selectability → Fewer Fixed-CCT SKUs → Lower Inventory Complexity
For contractors, it also provides adjustment flexibility when the required CCT differs between project areas or from preliminary specifications.
CRI 80 for General Commercial Lighting
The current series is specified at CRI 80, positioning it primarily for general commercial ambient lighting.
This may suit offices, corridors, common areas, reception spaces, and other general-purpose interiors.
Applications where subtle color differences affect merchandise, materials, artwork, or another visual task may require higher color-rendering performance.
10%–100% TRIAC/ELV Dimming
STARLAKE Circular Downlights support 10%–100% dimming with compatible TRIAC/ELV dimmers.
Compatibility should still be checked across the driver, dimmer, circuit configuration, connected fixture quantity, and required dimming range.
Selectable CCT and dimming also serve different functions: CCT changes light appearance, while dimming changes output.
Designed Around Real Ceiling Conditions
Downlight selection must account for the space above the ceiling as well as the visible ceiling plane.
Joists, ductwork, insulation, wiring, and other building services can limit available cavity depth. STARLAKE’s slim construction helps address installations where vertical clearance is constrained.
IC Rated for Insulated Ceilings
The current STARLAKE Circular Downlight series is IC Rated, allowing installation in applicable insulated-ceiling conditions when installed according to product instructions and electrical requirements.
The specification also identifies the series for damp locations.
Damp-location suitability should not be interpreted as approval for direct water exposure or outdoor installation. Applications involving greater moisture exposure require the appropriate environmental rating.
Separate Junction Box and Quick-Connect Wiring
The fixture uses a separate junction box with quick-connect push-in terminals and a connector between the driver assembly and luminaire.
Two spring-loaded clips secure the fixture to the ceiling after the junction box is positioned above the opening.
For projects involving many fixtures, installation cost is influenced by more than the luminaire price:
Ceiling Access + Cutout Preparation + Wiring + Connection Time + Fixture Installation → Installed Labor
Existing ceiling conditions and future service access should therefore be considered during specification.
Choose the Right Size for the Layout
The three configurations combine different aperture sizes with different output levels.
| Configuration | Output | Practical Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 4″ 9W | 720 lm | Smaller aperture where a compact ceiling appearance or denser layout is preferred |
| 6″ 12W | 960 lm | Mid-range size and output for general commercial layouts |
| 8″ 18W | 1,440 lm | Higher output where more lumens per fixture or a larger aperture is appropriate |
Fixture diameter should not be selected independently from lighting performance.
A smaller aperture can support a denser visual ceiling pattern, while a higher-output model can change fixture quantity or spacing. In retrofit projects, existing ceiling openings may constrain the available size.
The final selection should coordinate:
Illuminance + Ceiling Height + Spacing + Cutout + Fixture Quantity + Architectural Proportion
Match the Downlight to the Application
Different commercial interiors place different requirements on recessed lighting.
| Applicazione | What Matters Most | Practical Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Offices & Meeting Areas | Uniform ambient illumination | 3500K–4000K can be a starting point where neutral lighting is required |
| Lobbies & Reception Areas | Ceiling appearance and broad illumination | 110° distribution supports general ambient coverage |
| Corridors & Common Areas | Coverage continuity | Coordinate spacing with ceiling height to limit dark zones |
| Hospitality Interiors | Warmer atmosphere and output control | 2700K–3000K with dimming can support warmer design intent |
| Retail General Lighting | Ambient illumination and merchandise visibility | CRI 80 can serve general lighting; color-critical displays may require higher CRI |
These are starting points rather than fixed specifications.
Ceiling height, reflectance, daylight, visual tasks, furniture, decorative lighting, and adjacent luminaires can change the appropriate configuration.
When Should You Choose Another Fixture Type?
Circular downlights should not be used to solve every ceiling-lighting task.
Consider another fixture type when the project requires:
Tight accent beams
Adjustable aiming toward merchandise or artwork
Specialized wallwashing
Higher color-rendering performance
Environmental protection beyond the product rating
High-output illumination from substantially greater mounting heights
For example, a 110° recessed downlight provides broad ambient illumination but is not an optical substitute for a narrow-beam adjustable track light.
Defining this boundary prevents an unsuitable distribution from being compensated for simply by adding output or fixture quantity.
What Should You Confirm Before Requesting a Quote?
For a commercial downlight project, provide:
Project or facility type
Required fixture quantity
Altezza del soffitto
Work-plane height, where relevant
Existing or required ceiling cutout
Ceiling construction and insulation conditions
Target illuminance, if specified
Preferred fixture size
CCT requirement
Dimming requirement
Tensione di ingresso
Environmental conditions
Required certifications
Project schedule
Floor plans and target light levels can provide additional context where photometric evaluation is required.
For distribution or private-label programs, also provide the target market, expected volume, required configuration, certification, labeling, packaging, and inventory requirements.
Built for Commercial Lighting Programs
For lighting brands and distributors, a commercial downlight program also depends on product consistency, certification, packaging, labeling, production continuity, and supply planning.
Founded in 2010, STARLAKE supports these programs through manufacturing operations in Shenzhen and Cambodia, approximately 280,000 sq.ft of production space, 50+ engineers, and 30+ quality-control professionals.
OEM and ODM capabilities support product configuration, engineering coordination, private labeling, packaging, certification preparation, manufacturing, and quality control according to program requirements.
Bulk production orders undergo an 8-hour aging test before shipment, while new products undergo 30 days of continuous high-temperature testing during product validation.
These procedures support early-stage electrical, component, thermal, and assembly screening rather than serving as a direct simulation or guarantee of full product service life.
Warehouse support in Ohio and California can provide additional replenishment and fulfillment options for selected North American inventory programs.
The objective is to support a downlight program that remains practical to specify, stock, install, replenish, and maintain.
Specify the Downlight Around the Project
The appropriate commercial LED downlight should coordinate output, 110° distribution, spacing, CCT, color rendering, dimming, ceiling compatibility, and installation method.
For project selection:
Room Geometry → Ceiling Height → Required Illuminance → Fixture Size / Output → Spacing → CCT → Controls → Verification
