Why Use Vapor Tight Lighting in Wet and Dusty Spaces?
Vapor tight lighting addresses an environmental problem before it addresses a lighting problem.
Moisture, condensation, and airborne contaminants can reach electrical or optical components when fixture construction is not suited to the environment. Accumulated contamination can also reduce useful light output and increase maintenance requirements.
A sealed fixture places the LED source and electrical system inside a protected enclosure.
A practical selection chain is:
Environment → Exposure Severity → Required Protection → Temperature → Lighting Requirement → Fixture Configuration
The STARLAKE VAP Series combines IP65 protection, wet-location suitability, and a -40°C to 45°C operating range for demanding commercial and industrial applications.
What Does IP65 Mean for a Vapor Tight Light?
An IP rating describes protection against the ingress of solids and water.
For IP65:
6 → Dust-Tight
5 → Protection Against Water Jets Under Applicable Test Conditions
IP65 does not automatically establish suitability for continuous immersion, aggressive chemicals, salt spray, or every high-pressure sanitation process.
Three requirements should therefore remain separate:
Ingress Protection ≠ Wet-Location Suitability ≠ Corrosion Resistance
IP rating addresses ingress protection. Wet-location suitability relates to installation conditions, while corrosion resistance depends on how fixture materials and construction tolerate the actual corrosive environment.
Projects involving severe corrosion, intensive sanitation, chemical exposure, or specialized washdown requirements should be evaluated separately against the operating environment and applicable requirements.
Built for Cold, Damp, and Demanding Conditions
Temperature changes can create condensation, making refrigerated and damp environments particularly challenging for electrical equipment.
The VAP Series is rated for operation from -40°F to 113°F (-40°C to 45°C) and for wet locations.
Its sealed construction must manage two requirements simultaneously:
Environmental Protection + Internal Thermal Management
The product uses a photoelectric separation design intended to support heat dissipation within the sealed fixture construction.
Why LED Works Well in Cold Storage
Many conventional fluorescent systems can experience starting or output problems at low temperatures.
LED lighting provides instant-on operation without the same low-temperature starting behavior associated with many traditional fluorescent systems.
For cold-storage applications, evaluate:
Minimum Ambient Temperature → Condensation → Mounting Height → Required Illuminance → Distribution → Operating Cycle
A fixture’s temperature rating establishes only one part of suitability. It must still deliver the required illumination under the actual layout and operating conditions.
Performance Options for Commercial Projects
After environmental suitability is established, select the optical and electrical configuration.
Up to 140 lm/W With 120° Distribution
The VAP Series provides luminous efficacy up to 140 lm/W with a broad 120° beam distribution.
The linear form and wide distribution support broad illumination across work areas rather than concentrating output into a narrow center beam.
A useful relationship is:
Mounting Height → 120° Distribution → Fixture Spacing → Coverage → Working-Plane Illuminance → Uniformity
Higher efficacy can reduce the connected power required for a given lumen package, but efficacy alone does not determine fixture quantity.
Where layout performance matters, verify spacing and quantity using fixture-specific photometric data.
Fixed and Selectable Wattage
The VAP Series covers fixed and selectable configurations from 15W to 100W, depending on fixture length and electrical configuration.
Selectable combinations include:
25W / 20W / 15W
30W / 20W / 15W
50W / 30W / 20W
100W / 80W / 60W
90W / 70W / 50W
For contractors, selectable wattage provides field flexibility across different lighting zones.
For distributors:
One Platform → Multiple Output Settings → Fewer Fixed SKUs → Lower Inventory Complexity
The highest setting is not automatically the correct setting. Output should follow the required illuminance, mounting height, spacing, and layout.
Multiple CCT Options With CRI Above 80
Depending on model, fixed color temperatures are available from 3000K to 5000K.
Selectable versions provide 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K settings.
CRI above 80 supports general commercial and industrial illumination. Where food inspection, quality control, or other color-critical tasks are involved, required color-rendering performance should be established separately.
120–277V and 120–347V Configurations
The product family supports AC 120–277V and selected AC 120–347V configurations.
Verify the actual branch-circuit voltage before ordering.
Dimming, controls, emergency functions, and other electrical requirements should also be confirmed against the exact model and project wiring design.
Choose Vapor Tight Lighting by Environment
Different facilities use sealed lighting for different environmental reasons.
| Ambiente | Main Challenge | What to Prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Cold Storage | Low temperature, condensation | Temperature rating, sealed construction |
| Food Processing | Moisture, contaminants, cleaning | Ingress protection, color quality, sanitation requirements |
| Parking Structures | Humidity, dust, temperature variation | Distribution, uniformity, environmental protection |
| Warehouses | Dust, long operating hours | Protection, efficacy, spacing, maintenance |
| Light Corrosive Areas | Mild corrosive exposure | Material suitability, corrosion severity |
Cold Storage and Refrigerated Warehouses
Cold-storage applications combine low ambient temperature with potential condensation.
The VAP Series operates down to -40°C, making it applicable to many refrigerated warehouses, cold rooms, and similar environments where the remaining project requirements are also satisfied.
Food Processing and Production Areas
Sealed construction can protect internal electrical and optical components from moisture and airborne contaminants.
However:
IP65 ≠ Automatic Food-Processing Compliance
Projects requiring NSF, intensive washdown, specialized sanitation, or food-zone-specific compliance should be evaluated separately.
Parking Garages and Covered Parking Areas
Vehicle dust, humidity, temperature variation, and occasional moisture can make sealed linear lighting useful in covered parking structures.
The 120° distribution supports broad coverage, while final layouts should account for columns, beams, drive lanes, pedestrian areas, mounting height, and required uniformity.
Warehouses and Dusty Commercial Spaces
A sealed vapor tight fixture limits dust ingress into the luminaire and protects internal components from airborne particles.
The actual lighting layout should still follow mounting height, spacing, work-zone geometry, and required illuminance.
Light Corrosive Environments
The VAP Series is specified for slight corrosion-resistant applications.
Do not extend that claim automatically to aggressive chemicals, marine salt exposure, or severe corrosive environments.
IP65 does not establish chemical or salt-spray resistance.
Flexible Installation for Commercial Projects
The VAP Series supports ceiling surface mounting and suspended installation.
These mounting methods do more than change installation appearance because fixture height influences delivered illumination.
Surface or Suspended Mounting
Surface mounting keeps the fixture close to the ceiling and can suit parking structures, storage spaces, service rooms, and other locations with appropriate mounting surfaces.
Suspended installation lowers the fixture toward the target plane where the ceiling or structural configuration permits it.
This changes the relationship:
Fixture Height → Coverage Area → Illuminance → Spacing
Lowering a fixture can increase useful illumination at the working plane without simply increasing wattage, but it can also change coverage and spacing requirements.
Designed for Faster Wiring and Installation
Installation labor becomes significant when projects involve dozens or hundreds of linear fixtures.
The VAP Series integrates the lampshade and lamp-panel fixing plate to simplify wiring and assembly.
According to the product specification, this construction is intended to save more than half of installation time compared with the referenced conventional assembly approach. Actual project labor savings will depend on the installation method and site conditions.
Reserved screw holes in the clamps are also provided where additional fastening against vibration is required.
For larger projects, installation design should therefore consider both fixture cost and the labor required for mounting, wiring, and commissioning.
LED Vapor Tight vs Fluorescent Vapor Tight Lighting
Older cold-storage facilities, parking structures, warehouses, and industrial buildings may still use fluorescent tubes inside gasketed housings.
LED vapor tight systems provide instant-on operation without the same low-temperature starting behavior associated with many traditional fluorescent systems. They also eliminate replaceable fluorescent lamps within the luminaire.
The STARLAKE VAP Series is specified for a lifespan of at least 50,000 hours.
Retrofit selection should follow:
Existing Fixture → Lamp / Ballast → Existing Layout → Mounting Height → Required Illuminance → LED Photometry → New Configuration
Document existing fixture length, lamp and ballast configuration, fixture quantity, spacing, voltage, mounting, and current lighting performance.
Do not assume that equivalent physical length or lower LED wattage automatically produces an equivalent lighting result.
Replace maintained lighting performance—not nominal fluorescent wattage.
How to Select the Right LED Vapor Tight Light
A practical specification process starts with environmental exposure and ends with layout verification.
Define the environment – Identify moisture, dust, condensation, temperature, and corrosive exposure.
Confirm protection requirements – Determine whether IP65 and the fixture’s other ratings match actual conditions.
Set the target light level – Establish required illuminance for circulation, storage, production, or inspection.
Review mounting height and geometry – Include aisles, racks, columns, equipment, and obstructions.
Select fixture length and output – Compare 2 ft, 4 ft, and 8 ft configurations with fixed or selectable wattages.
Choose CCT and CRI – Match color quality to the visual task.
Verify voltage – Confirm 120–277V or 120–347V requirements.
Choose mounting – Compare surface and suspended installation with the ceiling structure.
Confirm controls and wiring – Review dimming and project electrical requirements.
Validate the layout – Use fixture-specific photometric data or an IES-based calculation where required.
This prevents a common specification error:
Correct Enclosure + Wrong Output / Distribution / Electrical Configuration = Wrong Fixture for the Project
What Should You Provide for a Project Quote?
For project evaluation, retrofit planning, or quotation, provide:
Application or facility type
Required quantity
Existing fixture information for retrofits
Altezza di montaggio
Target illuminance, if known
Fixture spacing or floor plan
Temperatura ambiente
Moisture and dust conditions
Corrosive exposure, if any
Supply voltage
Preferred CCT
Control requirements
Mounting method
Required certifications
Delivery schedule
If complete photometric information is not yet available, start with environment, mounting height, voltage, and target lighting requirement.
These inputs help determine whether the priority is environmental protection, low-temperature operation, output, distribution, installation, or a combination of these factors.
Commercial Lighting Manufacturing Behind the Fixture
A vapor tight luminaire integrates a sealed enclosure with LED modules, drivers, optics, thermal interfaces, electrical connections, and mounting components.
Assembly consistency therefore affects both environmental protection and electrical, optical, and thermal performance.
STARLAKE has manufactured LED lighting since 2010 and operates approximately 280,000 sq.ft of production space, with manufacturing operations in Shenzhen and Cambodia.
The company has 50+ engineers, 30+ QC professionals, and 100+ technical patents supporting product development and manufacturing.
Bulk orders undergo an 8-hour aging test before shipment. New products undergo 30 days of continuous high-temperature testing during product validation.
These processes support early electrical, component, assembly, and thermal screening. Aging testing does not replace long-term lumen-maintenance data, application-specific certification, or field-performance evaluation.
OEM and ODM Vapor Tight Lighting Support
STARLAKE provides OEM and ODM support for lighting brands, importers, wholesalers, distributors, contractors, and project suppliers.
Customization can involve:
Electrical and driver configuration
Wattage and lumen configuration
CCT options
Optical development
Mechanical and structural changes
Mounting
Private labeling
Packaging
Certification coordination
For vapor tight products, customization should follow:
Design Change → Sealing / Thermal / Electrical Impact → Validation → Compliance Review → Production
Changes affecting enclosure construction, gaskets, cable entry, mechanical interfaces, or other sealing-related components should be evaluated for their potential effect on environmental protection.
Electrical, thermal, optical, and certification impacts should likewise be reviewed before mass production.
STARLAKE also operates warehouses in Ohio and California, providing local inventory and fulfillment support for selected products serving the North American market.
Specify the Environment Before You Specify the Wattage
The right LED vapor tight light must first withstand the actual installation environment and then deliver the required lighting performance.
For the STARLAKE VAP Series, relevant configuration variables include IP65 protection, wet-location suitability, operation down to -40°C, efficacy up to 140 lm/W, CRI above 80, 120° distribution, multiple wattage and CCT options, and surface or suspended mounting.
For project evaluation, provide:
Environment → Temperature → Mounting Height → Target Light Level → Voltage → Required Compliance
STARLAKE can then evaluate whether a standard VAP configuration or customized solution fits the project requirements.
