STARLAKE provides LED barn lights for parking structures, passageways, corridors, service areas, and other commercial or utility spaces requiring broad localized illumination.
Unlike fixtures selected primarily by wattage or total lumen output, a barn light must work with its mounting position, orientation, and light distribution to deliver useful illumination across the intended area.
STARLAKE LED barn light solutions combine selectable output and CCT configurations with wide light distribution, dimming, and optional control capabilities for different project and operating requirements.
For lighting brands, distributors, contractors, and project buyers, STARLAKE also provides OEM/ODM engineering, controlled manufacturing, quality assurance, and North American warehousing support.
How to Choose the Right LED Barn Light
Start with where the fixture will be installed and what area it needs to illuminate.
A building surface, round pole, passageway, corridor, or parking structure creates different mounting conditions and coverage requirements. Fixture output should therefore be selected after considering the installation geometry rather than from wattage alone.
A practical selection process is:
Mounting Position → Target Area → Distribution → Useful Coverage → Controls → Final Configuration
Key project questions include:
- Where will the fixture be mounted?
- What area needs useful illumination?
- What are the mounting height and orientation?
- How broad does the required coverage need to be?
- What operating schedule or control strategy is required?
- What environmental and electrical conditions apply?
Once these conditions are defined, output, CCT, voltage, controls, mounting, and other requirements can be evaluated around the actual project.
Useful coverage matters more than wattage alone.
Mounting Position, Distribution & Target-Area Coverage
Barn light performance depends on the relationship between the fixture and the area it is intended to illuminate.
A useful engineering relationship is:
Mounting Position + Distribution → Ground / Surface Coverage → Illuminance
Lighting engineering references distinguish between luminous flux, which describes the total quantity of emitted light, and illuminance, which describes how much light reaches a surface. Spatial light distribution is therefore important when evaluating practical luminaire performance.
This means two fixtures with similar wattage or lumen output can produce different results when installed at different heights, angles, or positions.
The current STARLAKE BL02 platform uses a 150° distribution, supporting broad localized coverage from its intended mounting position. However, a wider beam does not automatically mean better lighting for every project.
Actual performance depends on factors including:
- Mounting height and orientation
- Target-area geometry
- Fixture output and photometry
- Required illuminance
- Interaction with adjacent fixtures
For example, changing the mounting height or orientation changes the relationship between the fixture and the target surface even when wattage remains the same.
For projects where coverage or lighting levels are critical, fixture-specific photometric data and actual installation geometry should guide final selection.
Broad Coverage & Visual Comfort
Wide distribution can help cover a larger localized area, but useful coverage should still be evaluated together with normal viewing positions.
A practical relationship is:
Mounting Height + Orientation + Source Visibility → Visual Comfort
Lighting references note that excessive source brightness in normal viewing directions can contribute to glare.
The objective is therefore not simply to maximize brightness, but to direct useful illumination toward the required area while considering how the fixture is experienced by people using the space.
Where a project specifies particular glare, cutoff, or spill-light requirements, performance should be verified using fixture-specific photometric information.
Controls for Different Operating Conditions
Commercial and utility spaces do not always require identical light output throughout every operating hour.
The STARLAKE BL02 platform supports 0–10V dimming and offers optional microwave motion sensor, Zhaga microwave motion sensor, PIR sensor, and emergency driver configurations.
This allows project planners to consider:
Operating Pattern → Occupancy → Required Output → Control Strategy
For areas with changing occupancy or operating schedules, an appropriate control configuration can help lighting operation respond more closely to actual site use.
Dimming, sensor, and emergency options should be confirmed for the specific order because accessory and electrical compatibility can vary by configuration.
Outdoor Protection & Installation
Environmental conditions and mounting requirements should be evaluated together when selecting a barn light.
Outdoor lighting references identify water, humidity, dust, temperature variation, and other environmental factors as relevant to luminaire selection.
The current STARLAKE BL02 platform features:
- IP65 protection
- Die-cast aluminum housing with powder-coat finish
- UV-stabilized polycarbonate lens
- Surface and round-pole mounting options
A useful project check is:
Installation Location → Environmental Exposure → Mounting Method → Electrical Requirements
Before installation, buyers should verify mounting conditions, available structure or pole dimensions, input voltage, wiring conditions, installation access, and site environmental requirements.
Projects involving unusually corrosive, coastal, extreme-temperature, or other demanding environments should be evaluated according to their specific conditions before the fixture configuration is confirmed.
CCT & Electrical Options
The current BL02 platform provides selectable 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K CCT configurations, allowing the visual appearance to be coordinated with the application, surrounding lighting, and project requirements.
The platform also provides selectable power and electrical configurations depending on the order.
Rather than treating these options independently, a project should coordinate:
Required Coverage + Electrical Supply + CCT + Controls → Final Fixture Configuration
Input voltage, power, dimming, sensor, and emergency requirements should therefore be confirmed together before production.
Replacing HID & Legacy Fixtures
LED barn lights may also be considered when modernizing existing commercial or utility lighting installations.
However, retrofit selection should not rely on:
Existing HID Wattage = New LED Wattage
Different luminaires can vary in optical efficiency, spatial distribution, controls, and the amount of useful light reaching the target area. Lighting engineering references likewise emphasize the importance of spatial light distribution when evaluating practical illumination.
A better retrofit process is:
Existing Fixture → Mounting Position → Electrical Supply → Target Area → Required Lighting Performance → New LED Configuration
Useful project information includes:
- Existing fixture and lamp type
- Mounting height and position
- Input voltage
- Existing controls
- Target area
- Required lighting performance
Mounting dimensions and installation photographs can also help determine whether mechanical changes may be required.
Depending on the new fixture’s actual performance, the appropriate LED configuration may not require a direct one-for-one wattage match.
Replace the required lighting performance—not simply the old wattage.
Where Can LED Barn Lights Be Applied?
The BL02 specification identifies parking garages, underground passageways, and corridors as recommended applications.
| Application | Main Project Considerations |
|---|---|
| Parking Garages | Coverage, mounting position, controls, visibility |
| Underground Passageways | Continuous illumination, mounting, operating conditions |
| Corridors | Distribution, fixture placement, visual comfort |
Based on its surface / round-pole mounting and broad distribution characteristics, the platform may also be evaluated for related commercial or utility applications where similar installation and coverage requirements exist.
Suitability should be determined from the actual mounting conditions, target area, electrical requirements, environmental exposure, and required lighting performance rather than the application name alone.

What We Need to Recommend the Right LED Barn Light
A useful recommendation starts with the installation conditions and required coverage—not simply the requested wattage.
For project evaluation or quotation, provide as much of the following information as possible:
- Project or application type
- Target area dimensions
- Mounting location and height
- Fixture orientation, if known
- Existing fixture information for retrofit projects
- Required illuminance or lighting criteria
- Input voltage
- Preferred CCT
- Dimming requirements
- Sensor or emergency requirements
- Environmental conditions
- Required certifications
- Estimated quantity
If available, also send a site plan, lighting layout, electrical requirements, existing fixture specification, mounting dimensions, or installation photographs.
STARLAKE can then evaluate output, mounting, coverage, electrical configuration, CCT, controls, and other project requirements around the actual installation rather than recommending a barn light from wattage alone.
Define where the fixture will be installed, what area it needs to illuminate, and how the space will operate before selecting the configuration.
